A Community Dialogue: Immigration Today

Are you tired of the hostile environment of the current political debate and want to have a civil conversation about the issue of immigration? Should the United States be a melting pot of people from around the world or should the borders be closed for security reasons? What should be done with the 11 million people who live in the U.S. without documentation and the children born to undocumented parents? How are we to ensure there are qualified workers in the industries that rely on immigrants for their workforce?

These are some of the immigration topics that will be discussed in a moderated community dialogue using a method developed and promoted by the National Issues Forum, a non-profit organization located in Dayton, Ohio. To guide our discussion, the Better Angels method for listening and speaking will also be used to ensure participants engage in a civil discussion to share their own views and also hear the views of others. The objective of the dialogue is to find common ground among each of the perspectives.

Prior to the event, participants will be provided a fact-based issue paper about immigration which describes the three different perspectives. A summary version will also be provided at the forum.
