INFORMATION RELATED TO THE BILL:
- “Every child in our country deserves access to a quality education. But for too long, Congress has fallen short on our promise to fully invest in our students and our schools,” said Senator Van Hollen. “It’s time we hold up our part of the bargain and provide full funding for Title I and IDEA. I urge the Congress to take up this legislation immediately to ensure our students have the resources they need to succeed, no matter what zip code they live in. We can no longer just pay lip service to education — we must make good on our promise to students, parents, and teachers across the country.” (Source: Rep. Lee, Press Release, 4/11/19)
- Congress made a promise to help level the playing field for low-income students by providing their schools with additional resources through Title I more than 50 years ago. But it has never properly funded the program. Nor has Congress kept its promise to fund 40 percent of the costs of special education, as it laid out in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which passed more than 40 years ago.
