INFORMATION RELATED TO THE BILL:

  •  “Today, U.S. Reps. Angie Craig (MN-02) and Pete Stauber (MN-08) introduced bipartisan legislation, the Supporting Apprenticeship Colleges Act of 2020.

This bill would provide assistance to apprenticeship colleges throughout the country. As these colleges bestow an Associate’s Degree and a Registered Apprenticeship, they are federally accredited institutions but are often left out of traditional higher education grant programs while they prepare students for the most in-demand jobs available.

As the country endures the economic challenges of COVID-19, we must begin to think about how we put people back to work in the jobs that build critical American infrastructure. I am proud to partner with my colleague, Rep. Stauber, to support the trades taught by Apprenticeship Colleges which lead to high-paying careers with endless opportunities to advance,” said Rep. Angie Craig. “I’ll keep fighting for an economy that works for Minnesota’s working and middle-class families.”

“As we collectively work to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, it is more important than ever to give Americans the tools to succeed. Apprenticeship Colleges like the Finishing Trades Institute of the Upper Midwest hand students the key to success by providing them with the training necessary to compete for jobs in a wide range of industries. By helping to put apprenticeship colleges like FTIUM on equal footing with other higher institutions, the Supporting Apprenticeship Colleges Act will ensure more hardworking Minnesotans have the opportunity to gain these in-demand skills. I am proud to work with my friend and colleague on this bipartisan legislation that will enhance our economy and help middle class families thrive,” Said Rep. Pete Stauber

“You only are aware of the opportunities that you can access. Accredited Apprenticeship programs provide a path to earn-while-you learn system of education.  Being a part of these programs builds worker skills and meets employer needs. But most of all this will enhance life outcomes,” said Ken Rigmaiden, President of the IUPAT.

Specifically, the bipartisan Supporting Apprenticeship Colleges Act of 2020 would:

    • Provide community grants for apprenticeship colleges to expand and support outreach to potential students and employers.
    • Provide grants for academic advising and student support programs in apprenticeship colleges, prioritizing those that address common barriers to completion for low-income students such as childcare, support for first-generation students and other programs.”
