We must hold politicians accountable
By Chuck Smith-Dewey
This website was launched in 2018 by my friend Caren Gallagher and me, aimed at fostering activism and community engagement in Minnesota’s second congressional district.
Caren had worked hard to hold Rep. Jason Lewis accountable to voters, holding town halls featuring cardboard cutouts of Lewis, and organizing protests, over his refusal to respond to voters who were not in his party.
Caren and I were both deeply committed to supporting Angie Craig in her run for Congress. We viewed Angie as a friend and were hopeful that she would embody our values in Washington, DC.
And for the initial years, she did.
Paul Wellstone famously stated, “There are two kinds of politicians. There are those who want to do something and those who want to be somebody.” He used this concept to differentiate between individuals who seek power and status and those who genuinely aim to assist everyday citizens.
It was a tough lesson, but it’s essential to hold our politiicans to a high standard when they are elected into office. We all need to carry forward the work of speaking truth to power.
